The Alphabet Quilt

For as long as I’ve been quilting, I’ve had a deep appreciation for foundation paper piecing (FPP) patterns designed by other makers. There’s something so satisfying about watching crisp lines and modern shapes come together with precision. One of my all-time favourite quilts I’ve ever made was a lion FPP quilt for my son — a project that truly showed me how powerful and expressive paper piecing can be.

After completing that quilt, I started to feel the itch to try designing my own foundation paper piecing patterns. At first, it was just for fun. I wanted to make a small, playful block — a hotdog quilt block (my favourite food!) — just to see if I could figure out the design process. That experiment quickly led to other ideas, including a Blue Jays logo block, and before I knew it, I was completely hooked on FPP design.

Why I Designed an Alphabet FPP Quilt Pattern

As my toddlers get closer to learning their ABCs, I realized I wanted something special for them — a modern alphabet quilt that was both educational and cozy. I envisioned a quilt they could sprawl out on while playing, snuggle under during story time, or even use as they start recognizing letters and spelling words.

I couldn’t quite find an alphabet quilt pattern that matched the clean, modern look I love, so I decided to design my own. That’s how my Alphabet Foundation Paper Piecing Quilt Pattern was born.

This pattern includes all 26 letters of the alphabet, designed to work together as a complete quilt, while still standing beautifully on their own. The finished quilt measures 35" x 51", making it perfect for a crib quilt, toddler quilt, or throw-size wall hanging.

Buy the Full Alphabet or Individual Letters

One of the things I wanted to make especially flexible about this pattern is how you can purchase and use it. Quilters can choose to buy:

This makes it easy to customize projects without committing to the entire alphabet — perfect if you’re making something personalized.

You can find both the full alphabet quilt pattern and the individual letter patterns in my Etsy shop.

Endless Project Ideas Using Alphabet FPP Letters

Whether you use the full quilt layout or just a few letters, this alphabet pattern opens up so many creative possibilities. Here are just a few ways quilters have been using (or could use!) these FPP letters:

  • A full alphabet quilt for a nursery, playroom, or toddler bed

  • Personalized name quilts using individual letters

  • Pillow covers featuring an initial or short word

  • Wall hangings for modern home décor or classrooms

  • Baby gifts with a single letter monogram

  • Quilt labels, tote bags, or zipper pouches

  • Educational floor quilts for letter learning and play

Because each letter is foundation paper pieced, the pattern creates sharp points and clean lines that really shine in both bold solids and playful prints.

Designed for Modern Quilters Who Love FPP

This alphabet quilt pattern was designed with modern quilters in mind — those who love precision, clean geometry, and the creative freedom that foundation paper piecing allows. Whether you’re an experienced FPP quilter or someone looking for a meaningful project with lots of repeatable blocks, this pattern is a fun and rewarding make.

If you’re looking for a foundation paper piecing alphabet quilt pattern, or individual FPP letter blocks to personalize your next project, I’d love for you to check it out.
